About Shipley

Shipley has associations with the novelist and poet Hilaire Belloc who lived here until he died in 1953, he owned King's Mill, it was the last working smock mill in these parts. There is a fine church here dedicated to St.Mary. The church shows fine Norman carving and contains the beautiful enamel Shipley Reliquary and the noted Caryll monument. The composer John Ireland is buried in the churchyard.

This is a pretty place set amid beautiful Sussex countryside where you can see several pleasant cottages and houses of note interspersed along quiet leafy lanes and huddled together in the village. There are two fine notable Gardens nearby - Holly Gate Catcus Garden and Leonardslee. Hickstead is clos-by, so too is the Wildlife Park, Woods Mill.
